Crossroads' Food Pantry (est. 1967) gives a "food basket" providing a three day emergency supply of food to families in need up to six times a year. Crossroads emergency program also distributes bus tokens and maintains an emergency fund which is used to assist with such things as gasoline, prescriptions, utility bills and rent.
Crossroads' Food Pantry is one of the busiest in Utah. During 2009, the food pantry served 21,214 households containing 46,122 members providing them a three-day, emergency supply of food. Also 2,847 orders of baby food /formula /diapers /etc, beyond what was distributed with those food orders.
Crossroads' Food Pantry is one of the largest distributors of food for the Utah Food Bank. However more than half of food we distribute is donated directly to Crossroads either through church food drives or by individuals who bring it in.
How you can help!
In 2009, the Crossroads' Emergency Fund directly benefiting people in need. We have a voucher system set up with a local
pharmacy and a gas station as a convenience for clients. In 2009, we spent over
$39,000 directly benefiting people in need through our emergency Fund. Two thousand
nine hundred forty-one households containing 4,943 people received gas vouchers,
bus tokens, or prescription assistance, while 166 families including 361 members
received other assistance through the fund, primarily to stop evictions and
utility shut offs.
Housed in a historic building near downtown Salt Lake City, the pantry is formally, The Luisa E. Lema Emergency Food Pantry at Crossroads Urban Center.
All these programs have been expanded greatly over the past several years.
