was organized by Crossroads to respond to concerns about the impact of the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games. We have been active in raising the issues of diversity and conflict of interest in the planning process for the Olympic games, and have sought to focus the attention of the community on the impact of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games will have on the affordability of housing, community development, civil rights for the homeless, non-poverty level job opportunities for local residents and the winter games will impact on social service providers.

The group, which includes American Indians, Hispanics, African Americans, people with disabilities, women and low income representatives, has been seeking the appointment of community representatives to the Salt Lake Olympic Committee (SLOC), as well as commitments by SLOC to an open planning process, to the creation of affordable, accessible housing, to maximize opportunities for good jobs and not let issues concerning civil rights be ignored.

The constructing affordable housing as part of the development process for the 2002 Olympics and the creation of job opportunities for low income and minority residents were prospective benefits sighted early on in the bid process as reasons to rally behind the games and IMPACT 2002 seeks to remind SLOC of past promises.

Focusing attention on "Olympic greed" and other negative impacts of hosting the games, such as rising rents, evictions, and the displacement of existing small businesses as well as the potential for civil rights abuses are among the other issues IMPACT 2002 seeks to keep in the public view.
