History, Activities and Successes
The Anti-Hunger Action Committee(AHAC) was
founded in 2002 as a way to allow low-income people have a voice for themselves.
Since its creation, AHAC members have:
-
Organized a “Basic
Healthcare” Rally on the first day of the 2007 legislative session
attended by over 120 people from 20 faiths and community organizations
- Organized protests and community forums to oppose
increases in bus fare and raise the concerns of low income bus riders.
these efforts have helped to slow down, and sometimes
stop, increases in the price of bus fare.
- Organized several press
conferences, rallies and other events to preserve
Medicaid funding. These efforts have led to millions of dollars in Medicaid
Funding, being preserved.
- Created an exhibit of photos showing what it is like to
work for less than $7 per hour in Utah that we displayed at the State Capitol
during the 2006 legislative session.
- Held an annual July barbeque
social and Holiday party, allowing members to come together at least twice
a year to celebrate the organization and their contributions.
- Organized events highlighting the need to reduce the red
tape faced by Food Stamp recipients. One of these events was the Food
Stamp Challenge,
at which the Executive Director of the Department of Workforce Services failed
to fill out a food stamp application within 15 minutes. As a result of this,
the food stamp application was shortened and simplified.
In all of these activities we attempt to ensure that low income
individuals have a voice in the decision making process as advocates for themselves.
